10 Lifestyle Tips to Get in Order Before Launching Your Business

If you’re building a new business, welcome to a whole new world of ownership!  You’ll need to treat  your business with clear intention and commit your time, finances, and energy to it.  I have a quick story to share with you to help you relate an online business costs and effort to that of traditional education.    If you were going back to school to get educated you’d have to pay the tuition cost, plus childcare, you’d have to commit the time for studying….this is no different.  When you work from home and you don’t have a “job” or “school” to go to, you need to be disciplined.  You will only obtain success if you put your time and energy into it.  Every business takes time, money, and energy, the internet is no different.

  1. Money:  Starting and growing a business takes time and financial investment…period. You’ll hear many online courses, gurus, or scammers telling you that you’ll make money immediately, or just this one trick will make you a millionaire…and for a one-time fee.   Even some well established online gurus will sell you a program for a lot of money and very little in return, you really do have to be careful.  I’ve been there done that…it takes time, the right mentors, and investment as any business does. Over the last few years I’ve listened to many mentors and online gurus and I have yet to come across one of their business stories that started out making money right away.  Every super-successful person I’ve come across has worked very hard, they’ve invested in their business and grown their success over time.  Of course, some are quicker and have a different journey than others, but you need to be patient, continue to educate and grow your business…..and you’ll achieve it (and I’d love to help you on that journey)!!

2. Ways to get funds: If you’re wishing to start a business but are short on funds I would strongly recommend you do a few things to get a good starting base, or else you’ll get stopped in your tracks and you won’t have the ability to move forward. Then….you’ve thrown any investment, time and energy out the window.  I have a few suggestions to help build up your  initial investment, perhaps start with network marketing, which is a minimal investment, and then sell the products to family and friends to make some money to help your start.  I’ve found a great way to get some quick cash is to sell used items you don’t need anymore from around your home on craigslist..more cash in pocket.  If you’re home with kids there’s a great dog sitting service called (rover.com) that for walking a dog you make some extra cash.  Perhaps you can do some babysitting services if you’re home with your kids.  do some on-line jobs to make enough money so that you don’t get started into something and end up wasting that time and money because you don’t have the money to grow your business.

3. Mindset:  This may sound silly, but getting up and showered and nicely dressed for work almost every day.  Of course, we all have the odd day you may want to be in your jammies, but true productivity will happen when you’re up, organized, and ready to go.  Get your mindset in the right place!  Also, if you treat your business as if you’re having to go somewhere daily, like if you were going to university or a job.  the only difference is you’re working,  you’re just earning online.  Make sure you get your finances, childcare and mindset in order.   Be willing to put in really hard work in the beginning so that it will be easier down the road.

4. Your Workplace: Set-up a comfortable workspace for you. Have everything that you need to run your business, computer, folders, filing cabinet, printer, etc. Having a comfortable, organized, separate place in your home is the best for productivity.  Remember your office is your money-making place so treat it that way.  Let your family know that is your office space and needs to be treated seriously and professionally.  It’s proven that if you are in an inviting environment that your productivity is better. It’s also important to have a place to go and be away from the rest of the household if at all possible.

5. Prioritizing: Are there things in your life you can say no to?  We all have the same number of hours in the day so why can some people seem to accomplish so much more than others?  Saying no to things that don’t bring your closer to your goal, or add value to your life.

6. Making your time happen:  Set-out a daily schedule for how you want your day to flow.  Make productive time for breaks, a walk, meetings with others, lunch, etc.   If you have children time is always short.  Sit down and make a list of things you can implement into life to help make more time in your day.  Can you swap taking turns driving to sporting events with another parent? Is after school care or daycare an option…or perhaps a necessity?  Do you have a grandparent who can take the kids at certain times?  If you have a partner, can you work times for them to take the kids out?  Do you have a friend you can swap playdates with?   If you try to work around the kids, it never runs very smoothly, that’s just life.

7. Getting organized:  Make sure you have a realistic daily to-do list, prioritizing what needs to be done, and making sure you can have actual progress each day.  If you get sidetracked, keep it on your list to get back to it in a free block of time.  Do you have any household duties you can outsource?  Is ordering in prepared meals an option?  How about a housecleaner?  Think of what your time is truly worth?  It’s much cheaper to hire people to do these jobs so you can focus on making a substantial wage.  It may hurt a bit in the beginning but will pay dividends in the end.

8. Commit:  Commit, commit, commit!!!  I can’t shout this out loud enough!!  Committing is the number one thing that will bring you to success.  Commit, invest, and educate and you’ll attain those results.

9. Don’t get sidetracked:  Don’t get caught up on emails, Facebook or personal calls during your workday.  Set a time once in the day to manage your e-mails and calls so they don’t manage you. When you work from home friends and relatives have a tendency to contact you more knowing your home, so keep the friend/family call time separate (answering matching works well if they don’t cooperate;)

10. Momentum:  Once your business is running successfully, be sure to implement time in each day to learn new skills, and further educate yourself.  You can never know enough about your industry, the more you know the more you grow!!

Many people think working from home sounds wonderful, and it truly is for many people! But it has its drawbacks and it’s definitely not for everyone.  If you’re on the fence if working from home is the right lifestyle for you, you can always try a side business by starting with one or two days a week, to see if a home business works for you!

Women Who Invest in themselves…..go further!

One of my mentors, Natalie Hodson, was $170,000 in debt from student loans for getting her degree, and she still couldn’t get a good-paying job after graduating (now that’s deflating isn’t it!).   Natalie decided to go into business for herself, tried a variety of online opportunities and programs, and eventually hired Rusell Brunson as her personal coach for $25,000.  That seems a scary number, but guess what that brought her,  a million dollars in her first four months of completing her own course.  The world has evolved and changed and so is our new way of educating and doing business.
