Creating a Vision Board
Hello Ladies! If you’re at all like me, your brain is used to processing a million thoughts per minute …… Truly…I find it hard to quiet the thing down!! I always have a million ideas and things on my mind that drag me in more than a million directions. I’ve had to implement some strategies to help me get more laser-focused on my big picture and what micro-steps I required to get there, one of them is creating a vision board.
And, in these present times, especially if you’re a mom with constant distractions, there is too much pull from everywhere seeking your immediate attention. As a working mom of two busy boys, I understand that distractions are an easy trap that anyone can fall into. I have been trapped many times, and I still do get trapped today, but I’ve implemented some things to help me navigate this crazy time in life called “motherhood”!
I love being a work-at-home mom, but It can be very challenging to focus on whatever matters the most. I’d like to share a little secret with you, I’ve still been able to fulfill my dreams and goals by taking action and doing things outside of my comfort zone…I’ve pushed myself. It can be hard to get that people are reaching your goals when you’re just starting or struggling to get started….but it can happen….you can balance it all like a Pro, one step at a time.
There’s one life hack that I have mastered over time that helps remind me where I am, what I want, and where I’m going. It has helped me stay focused on my overall goals. And I would definitely like to share it with you all today:
It’s a vision board! So, what’s the point of a vision board?
A vision board helps to keep your mind on point and to keep you out of the trap of the never-ending vicious circle of life. I like to connect with my goals every day through a vision board.
You must be thinking…..one more thing to add to your “things to do list”? Well there’s the initial making of it that takes a little bit, but implementing small life hacks makes all the difference to building that dream lifestyle, you’ve just got to push yourself to do it.
So before I begin with how it can benefit you, let me share with you “What a vision board is”?
A vision board in simple words is a poster board that helps you gather a visual representation of your goals. It can be your work/professional goals, fitness goals, or relationship goals…or whatever goals you may have…it’s your goals.
But, “Why do you need a board to help you with your goals”?? Is it a magic board that will use its magic wand to boost your energy up? Not exactly, but according to psychology today, mental practices (like visualization) can increase your motivation, confidence, and even your motor performance. So with this simple life hack, another tool is being added to your toolbox of life.
There’s no magic wand here, but it works wonders because when you start surrounding yourself with representations of how you want to lead your life, the more it becomes a reality. The more you look at your goals or targets, the more motivated and determined you become, it can and will actually help you achieve them!
I am a work-from-home mom and my vision board is right at my work desk in my office. So every day when I look at my vision board, I’m reminded of my strengths, how far I’ve come, where I’m still to go, and how I can achieve all that I want. I often update and pin the key things I’m working on or the motivational factors to remind me of what I am working on during the day, my goals.
As I continue to achieve my goals I continue to update the same and mark it on my vision board. I constantly fill my board with new images, places, inspiring quotes, and experiences that are close to my heart. It not just brings much-needed positivity to my life but also makes me feel good inside out.
What you should put on a Vision Board?
- Whatever motivates and matters to you most you should put on your vision board.
- Find things that symbolize your feelings, experiences and what you want to attract in your life.
- Find what motivates you and keeps you moving? It can be pictures, quotes, text goals, and whatever works for you.
Vision Board Categories
You can create a vision board for multiple areas of your life. We often think of a vision board as our “dream board”, or “success board” but it’s great to create boards that represent different areas of your life. It will help you focus on improving specific parts of your life as needed. Here’s three categories I use and that you may consider for your vision board-
Vision board for professional life
When it comes to your career ladies you can fill the board with everything you want for your career. It can include images that represent benefits, your working environment, career growth, and more. How much do you plan to achieve in the next 5 years? Are you wanting to make a career switch. Whatever you want to achieve in your career, post the images that represent your goals, outcome and what you achieve from this.
Vision board for family goals
So what are your plans for your family? Where do you want your kids to be, what you want to provide them? What are all activities you would love to do with them over the weekend? Do you want to travel together or want to spend some time cooking? Whatever you plan to do, you can place those goals, images on this board.
Vision board for Health
Health is wealth and for a new mom like you, it becomes all the more important that you religiously take care of your health. Whatever you want to achieve for your health you can add this to your board. Be sure to focus on your health and not just physical health but mental health too. Post-pregnancy you may have been dealing with postpartum issues which makes you feel lonely, depressed. Don’t worry. Slowly and steadily take out time for your health. If there are things you want to do like eating better and want to begin with exercises then you can post images that will help you remind your target.
Making a Vision Board
Now if you have decided that you are ready, begin with your vision board and have finalized the theme as well. It’s the time you start making one. It can be a simple one and does not necessarily have to be elaborative.
The Top thing….put your vision board somewhere you can see it!!
- You need to choose the size that best suits you. Many people often like big poster boards that they can hang up on their walls but do what works for you. I personally have my entire office wall above my desk filled with my vision board, that way my goals are in front of me while I build my success. Your vision board is your personal choice, so do you!
Get Your Board Ready and Your Magazines and Start Clipping….
- Choose the material that you want. You can use an empty wall, a poster, corkboard, or a sketchbook…heck…it’s your vision board, whatever you want it to be, build it!! The kind of material you use is not the important part, what’s important is that you create the board.
- Just make sure you have enough scissors, glue, and tape for cutouts.
- Gather some magazines that you like. If you don’t have one you can look for them at stores or libraries.
- Cut out the specific words, phrases, and photos that you are attracted to. You can simply select the items that draw your attention.
- When I create my board, I gather what I want to add and then I begin with the layout on the board in a temporary arrangement. I love to play around with the positioning and play around with it until I find what I like.
- After finalizing the arrangement you can attach or paste theme piece by piece on the board.
Make sure you do updates…
Think of your board as your life, a living thing. There are moving parts to our lives, so build, add and change your goals as you accomplish, adapt and grow along the way.
Get ready to fulfill your dreams
A vision board can help you achieve more than you think. And the coolest part of creating a vision board is that it is a low-time investment. Once you have created it then all you need to do is look, add whatever you want along the way and begin with action.
Well now I have finally told you one of my life hack secrets, now you can begin to create one.
I seriously encourage you should create one too as it will help you stay on track and focused. It was a soul-searching experience for me and I am sure it will be equally rewarding and soulful for you. I mapped out my dream life with a bunch of questions, you can get the “create your dream life” questionnaire here to help you.
Just remember to visit, revisit your vision board regularly to keep reminding yourself of what you are working on. And as your goals evolve and materialize keep adding more pins to them and take time to congratulate yourself for all your progress and wins along the way!
Build your dream life ladies..you got this!
